How to update the Google Play Store app

Play normally updates itself

The Play Store app downloads its own updates in the background and applies them the next time it is closed. There is no Update button because there is usually nothing to press. If features seem missing, first check the version: Play Store › profile picture › Settings › About › Play Store version.

Force the check

Under About tap Update Play Store. Play either reports it is up to date or downloads the new version and asks you to reopen it. This works on every phone with Google services.

When that does not help

  1. Clear Play Store storage: Settings › Apps › Google Play Store › Storage › Clear cache, then Clear storage. You stay signed in; only local data is reset.
  2. Do the same for Google Play services and Google Services Framework (enable Show system to see the latter).
  3. Check the date and time are set automatically. A wrong clock breaks Play's certificate checks and stalls all updates.
  4. Reboot.

Play Store disabled or uninstalled

Play is a system app and cannot be uninstalled without root, but it can be disabled. Settings › Apps › Google Play Store › Enable. If updates were uninstalled (the Uninstall updates option in the same screen), the factory version reinstalls itself within a few hours once enabled.

Installing a Play Store APK

On a device that has Google services but a broken Play app, installing the Play Store APK from a mirror works because it is signed with Google's key and matches the installed copy. Pick the version matching your Android version; Play's own listing notes the minimum. On a device without Google services (Huawei, some TV boxes), the Play Store APK installs but cannot sign in without Google Play Services and the Services Framework, so it is not a fix on its own.

Region and account issues

If Play shows only a limited catalogue, the store country may be wrong; see how to change your Google Play country.
