Play Protect warnings when installing an APK, explained

What Play Protect checks

Google Play Protect scans every package at install time and periodically afterwards, on any device with Google services. It compares the package against Google's malware signatures and, since 2024, runs a real-time check on packages it has never seen. The result appears as one of a few messages.

The messages

"App scanned. No harmful apps found": informational; the install proceeds.

"Blocked by Play Protect. This app can harm your device": Play Protect matched the package to known malware or to a family it considers harmful. Tapping More details shows the reason and an Install anyway option. Treat this as a real block unless you can verify the file independently.

"Unsafe app blocked": shown on Android 13 and later in some regions (Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, India and others under Google's enhanced fraud protection) when a sideloaded app requests permissions commonly abused by fraud: SMS, notifications access, accessibility. This block cannot be bypassed on the device for that package; the alternative is the Play build if one exists.

"This app was built for an older version of Android": not Play Protect; Android warns that the app targets an old API level. Old builds may work but can misbehave on new Android.

False positives

They happen with legitimate but unusual packages: modified builds of open-source apps, development builds, apps that use accessibility services. Check the package signature against the developer's known certificate (see the safety guide) before choosing Install anyway. Files on this site are the packages developers uploaded, unchanged, and are rarely flagged; if one is, the version page's file size and signature checks tell you whether the download is intact.

Turning scanning off for one install

Play Store › profile picture › Play Protect › Settings › Scan apps with Play Protect. Turn it off, install, turn it back on. Play Protect will still scan the app during its next periodic sweep and may disable it then if it considers it harmful.
